Feeling Down? Me too!

Feeling a bit blue with all this dreary weather? Me too! It's like Mother Nature decided to throw a never-ending gray party, and we're all stuck with the invite.

But we aren't stuck with the Blues; I've got some science-backed and personally tested strategies that'll have you feeling better soon.

First, Admit It, You're Feeling Down: First things first, let's admit it—we're feeling about as cheerful as a wet sock right now. And you know what? That's okay! Naming it and claiming it is the first step to packing your low mood up and sending it on its way.

Talk About It (Preferably while eating chocolate): Now that we've acknowledged our “meh” disposition, it's time to call up your bestie or your favorite family member and spill the beans. Trust me, sharing is caring, especially when it comes to commiserating. I always feel honored when others share their real feelings with me. It’s quite a gift so why do I tend to isolate?

Seek Something Social that excites you: Whether it's a virtual hangout or an in-person gathering , spending time with friends and loved ones can work wonders for lifting us up. Bonus points for heading outdoors to seek beauty.

Get Moving (Even if it's Just to take the trash cans down to the street): Sure, your bed or couch might be calling your name, but resist the urge to hibernate! Studies show that even a little bit of movement can do wonders for your mood. So, lace up those sneakers and get moving! Whether it's a brisk walk around the block or a dance party in your living room, you'll be feeling better in no time. I try to get outside for at least 20 minutes each day.

Practice Self-Compassion (And Treat Yourself Like Your Best Friend): Listen up, self-critic: it's time to cut yourself some slack! Instead of beating yourself up for feeling down, treat yourself with the kindness and compassion you deserve. Indulge in a little self-care, whether it's a an epsom salt bath, a Netflix binge, or a decadent dessert. Or hop in your car or on a plane and head to the sunshine! You're worth it!

When All Else Fails, Call in the Pros: If these feelings won't budge, don't be afraid to call in reinforcements. I know when I’m not responding to friends or when I’m just not myself that its time to reach out for help. Whether it's a therapist, a support group, or your fur family, reach out for help when you need it.
