I sometimes get Overwhelmed…
I've traveled more, seen more sights, and encountered more cultures than I ever imagined and I LOVE IT. As a solo traveler, my adventures have become an inseparable part of my identity. Yet, beneath the surface of my seemingly well-put-together exterior lies a vulnerability that occasionally surfaces—a feeling of being overwhelmed.
Being a solo female traveler at 62 comes with its own set of challenges. While I relish the freedom and independence it affords me, there are moments when the weight of expectations, both from myself and others, bears down heavily. I've just recently come to realize that this feeling stems from my innate desire never to let anyone down.
I am easily enticed by new experiences. The thrill of the unknown propels me forward, driving me to explore every nook and cranny wherever I am. But therein lies the dilemma: the desire to do it all.
I'm learning (and relearning) to listen to the whispers of my body and mind. There are times when the pace of my adventures becomes too frenetic, crowds too large, noises too noisy and then the incessant need to keep moving takes its toll. In those moments, I'm beginning to recognize the importance of slowing down, of allowing myself the luxury (and necessity) of rest.
Okay, I do know that I can't do it all. And so, I'm getting better at embracing self-care in my travels and at home. Sometimes, it's as simple as finding a quiet spot outside of a party and taking a few deep breaths. Other times, it means reaching out to a friend, indulging in the luxury of a nap, and/or allowing my body to recharge and my mind to reset for the adventures that lie ahead.
Perhaps the most important lesson I'm learning is the power of saying no. Or “this is what I CAN do”. No to unrealistic expectations, no to the fear of missing out, and most importantly, no to the self imposed pressure to always be on the go. By setting boundaries and prioritizing my own well-being, I'm discovering a sense of balance in my travels and life.
So, to others (travelers or not) navigating the joys and challenges of life, remember this: it's natural (and okay) to feel overwhelmed sometimes. Embrace the journey, but don't forget to pause, take a breath, and give yourself the grace to slow down. After all, the true beauty of life lies not only in the places we see, the time we share with others but in the moments of self-discovery along the way.
