8 things to do to help you manage stress

Feeling overwhelmed by stress is a common experience, and there are several techniques you can use to (mostly) manage it. It is, after all, life and life is unpredictable. Having these 8 tools in your tool box will help!

  1. Deep Breathing and Mindfulness: Practice deep breathing exercises to help calm your mind and reduce physiological symptoms of stress. Mindfulness techniques, such as meditation and/or focusing on the present moment, can also help you manage stress by promoting relaxation and mental clarity.

  2. Physical Activity: Get some exercise, such as walking, swimming, jogging, yoga, or dancing. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters, and can help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. I know that within 15 minutes I feel like the world is A-OK!

  3. Time Management: Break tasks down into smaller, more manageable steps and prioritize them based on importance and deadlines. This can help prevent feeling overwhelmed by tackling tasks one at a time and focusing on what needs to be done in the present moment. Make a list and cross of each item as you complete it. And, if you do something that isn’t on your list... add it and cross it off!

  4. Set Boundaries: Learn to say no to additional responsibilities when you're feeling overwhelmed. Setting boundaries and recognizing your limits can help prevent overcommitment and reduce stress levels. If saying no is difficult for you, try saying “Here is what I can do…”

  5. Seek Support: Talk to friends, family members, or a therapist about what you're feeling. Simply sharing your thoughts and emotions with others can provide validation, perspective, and support, helping you feel less alone in managing stress. Sometimes, I say something outlaid that helps me realize what I really need.

  6. Healthy Lifestyle Habits: Maintain a balanced diet, get enough sleep, and avoid excessive caffeine (this one is a big challenge for me… and is partly why I also have trouble getting enough sleep), alcohol, and nicotine, we know that these substances can elevate feelings of stress. Prioritize self-care activities that promote physical and emotional well-being for you. You may find reading, knitting, painting, or cooking therapeutic. Do that!

  7. Practice Relaxation Techniques: Experiment with relaxation techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation, visualization, or listening to calming music. Find what works best for you and incorporate it into your daily routine to help alleviate stress.

  8. Seek Professional Help: When stress becomes overwhelming and interferes with your daily functioning, consider seeking help from a mental health professional. Therapists can provide coping strategies, support, and guidance tailored to your individual needs. I have learned a lot about myself and am able to understand others more compassionately because of my Professional Coach.

Managing stress is a process, and seeking help and support when needed is absolutely the way to go. By implementing these strategies and finding what works for you, you can (mostly)manage feelings of overwhelm and stress in your life.
